Schynige Platte Hike
An Epic Panorama Trail above Interlaken
Perched high above Interlaken, the Schynige Platte Hike is more than just a walk in the mountains. It’s an epic panorama trail that delivers amazing views of two turquoise lakes and the iconic peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Add a nostalgic cogwheel train ride, flower-filled meadows, and optionally the historic Faulhorn summit, and you’ve got one of the most unforgettable hikes in Switzerland.
Getting There
Your adventure begins in Wilderswil, a short train ride from Interlaken. From here, the historic cogwheel railway climbs nearly 1,400 vertical meters in just under an hour, operating only from June to October. To plan your trip, it’s best to check the official timetable on SBB before you go.
The ride itself is worth the journey. Wooden benches, nostalgic charm, and endless photo opportunities as the train slowly climbs to Schynige Platte (1,967 m).
STARTING POINT
At the top station (1967 m), you’ll find:
A traditional mountain hotel with a sunny terrace, perfect for enjoying coffee or a meal before your hike
Sweeping views across Interlaken, Lake Thun, and Lake Brienz
Fun for kids: a small playground where children can run and play
Cultural touches: Every day between 11 am and 2 pm, you can watch a live performance of alphorn players, Switzerland’s most traditional musical instrument
The Alpine Garden, with more than 600 alpine plant species, is well worth a short visit before heading out on the panorama trail
It’s worth taking a few minutes here before setting off on the hike. The scenery is already jaw-dropping, and the hotel offers a little side program that makes the visit enjoyable for the whole family.
Schynige Platte to First
The Schynige Platte Panorama Trail is long, varied, and spectacular from start to finish.
1. Meadows & Alpine Flora
The hike begins gently, with trails winding through wildflower meadows where marmots whistle from the hillsides. In summer, you’ll see gentians, alpine roses, and edelweiss along the path.
2. Endless Panoramas
Soon, the route opens up into sweeping views. To your left, the turquoise Brienzersee glitters far below. To your right, the mighty peaks of the Bernese Alps rise dramatically into the sky. Every few steps, another photo-worthy scene appears.
3. Faulhorn Summit to Bachalpsee
At 2,681 meters, Faulhorn marks the high point of the hike, though reaching it is optional. The historic mountain inn is a great place for a short break before continuing. For those who prefer a more direct route, the trail can lead straight to the famous Bachalpsee. This crystal-clear lake, framed by rugged peaks, is one of the most photographed spots in the region and a perfect pause before the final stretch. From here, an easy scenic walk leads to First, where the gondola carries you down to Grindelwald.
