Augstmatthorn
Switzerland’s Most Beautiful Ridge Hike
Perched along a dramatic ridge line with turquoise lakes on either side, the hike from Harder Station (Harder Kulm) to Augstmatthorn is a true alpine adventure. This trail isn’t for casual walkers – it demands sure footing, stamina, and some mountain hiking experience. Along the way, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Lakes Brienz and Thun and, if you’re lucky, an up-close encounter with the region’s wild ibex, quietly roaming their high-altitude home.
Starting Point: Harder Station
You’ll kick things off at Harder Station, right above Interlaken. Most hikers take the funicular up to Harder Kulm to save the legs for the real ridge walk—but if you’re feeling ambitious (and your calves like a challenge), you can hike up from Interlaken too.
Once you’re up top, take in the postcard-worthy view over Interlaken sandwiched between the two lakes, and then head east along the ridge. That’s where the adventure begins.
The Trail: Ridge Walk Heaven
The hike is about 9 km one way, with around 900 m of elevation gain, usually taking 3 – 4 hours to reach Augstmatthorn – so be sure to allow enough time! You’ll need a good set of lungs, sturdy shoes, and a steady step for the ridge, which rolls up and down in a mix that’s equal parts breathtaking and – at times – exhilaratingly narrow.
It’s the kind of trail where you’ll stop every five minutes for “just one more photo,” until you realize you’ve taken 200.
Wildlife Encounter: Meeting the Ibex
As you near Augstmatthorn, keep your eyes peeled. This area is part of the Alpine ibex colony that roams freely in the region. They’re surprisingly unbothered by humans, but remember: admire from a distance. This is their home—you’re just passing through.
The Augstmatthorn lies within the Eidgenössisches Jagdbanngebiet, a federally protected wildlife reserve. That means no camping, no fires, and no drones. Please respect nature and help keep this unique environment intact for generations to come!
The Summit: Augstmatthorn
Augstmatthorn isn’t the tallest peak in Switzerland, but it’s one of the most rewarding. From the summit, you’ll have a 360° panorama: the Bernese Alps (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau) rising in the distance, and the twin lakes sparkling far below, all framed by a rugged ridge line that demands attention and careful steps.
When to Go
Recommended Season
The best time for this hike is late June through late September, when the rail is snow-free and the Lombachalp-Habkern bus service is fully operational. Outside these months, conditions are more challenging, and bus service may be limited.
Weather Considerations
Always check weather forecasts before heading out. Fog, rain, or wet rocks can make the ridge dangerous. Even on sunny days, the cloud base may be low, leaving you walking in fog. Slippery rocks add to the challenge of this hike.
Hike Back the Same Way
Retrace your steps along the ridge to Harder Kulm, then descend (or take the funicular) to Interlaken. This option doubles both the length and duration of the hike.
Descend to Lake Brienz
From Augstmatthorn, continue back toward Suggiture before descending steeply toward Niederried or Ringgenberg. The descent is demanding on the knees, so trekking poles are highly recommended. Once in the valley, you can catch a train or boat along Lake Brienz back to Interlaken. This option adds about 2 hours and 50 minutes of hiking time and 1714 m of descent.
Descend to Habkern / Lombachalp
A popular option is to descend into the Habkern valley. From Lombachalp (Jägerstübli) you can connect with the AlpinBus back to Habkern and from there to Interlaken. Only available from the end of June to the end of September. Please check with +41 (0)33 843 13 43 (Sporthotel Habkern) to confirm the schedule. This option adds about 1h of hiking time and 580 m of descent.

Pro Tips for the Hike
- Experience: This is a ridge hike; be confident with exposed trails and uneven terrain!
- Gear: Sturdy hiking boots and layered clothing are essential! Even on hot valley days, it can be windy on the summit
- Sun Protection: bring sunscreen, a sunhat, and sunglasses.
- There are no refill options along the trail, so carry enough water (1.5 l recommended) for the whole hike. On hot days, consider isotonic drinks to stay hydrated, plus energy-rich snacks (nuts, dried fruit, chocolate) to keep your strength up.
- Timing: Start early to enjoy calm conditions and maximum daylight.
